A Beautiful Riverfront Campus

Transforming a Former Industrial Site

We were pleased to collaborate closely with Match Charter Public School to transform a 5-acre site, formerly used for light industry, into a beautiful new child-friendly campus along the Neponset River. The vibrant and welcoming campus serves Pre-K to grade 5 students, especially English Language Learners and those on the road to becoming first-generation college students, and setting them up for success in higher education and beyond.

Student-Centered Design

The campus is made up of two classroom buildings and a gymnasium arranged around a central courtyard. Extensive outdoor spaces including playing fields, playgrounds, and outdoor learning areas, take advantage of the reclaimed riverfront.

Inside, our design integrates Match’s tutoring-based educational model with flexible classroom layouts, small meeting rooms, and booths to support diverse learning styles and individualized instruction.

A Good Neighbor

Designed as a low-rise, neighborhood-scaled complex, the campus respects the surrounding residential context while fostering a strong sense of community and shared responsibility central to the school’s spirit.

Dedicated drop-off and pick-up areas, paired with a proactive traffic management plan, minimize neighborhood impact.

Sustainability and Resilience

Using modular construction for this project helped reduce waste during construction and encouraged the recycling of old materials. Energy-efficient lighting and HVAC systems, low-flow plumbing fixtures, a highly insulated building envelope, and daylight harvesting reduce energy and water needs of this project.

In addition, rain gardens along the riverbank will be planted with native and adaptive species that were chosen as much for their capacity to treat stormwater as for their beauty, thereby enhancing the ecological quality of the site.
