Innovative Student Spaces for Interdisciplinary Learning

Supporting Students’ Growth and Success

We were pleased to work with Boston Preparatory Charter School to expand and enhance the school’s student spaces to better serve its mission: “to prepare students to succeed in four-year colleges and to embody, in thought and action, lifelong ethical growth.” We brought this vision to life in a two-phase project that included an initial 49,800 square foot building and a subsequent 32,000 square foot addition.

Purposeful Design for Collaboration and Creativity

Just like the Boston Prep educational program, our space programming was carefully designed with intention and purpose to guide students in reaching their full potential. The result? A welcoming school complete with day-lit classrooms, science labs, a library, and enrichment rooms. We also created spaces that foster connections between students and faculty, encouraging collaboration and building a strong sense of community.

The new-and-improved space boasts:

  • a full-service kitchen (which allows meals to be served in the cafeteria)
  • a library
  • full-size gym
  • art studio
  • outdoor spaces for recreation and quiet reflection

The south-facing building incorporates passive solar strategies, including a high-performance building envelope and systems.

A Hub for Innovation

During Phase 2, we collaborated with the visionary leaders at Boston Prep to design a one-of-a-kind interdisciplinary hub called the Phoenix Design Center (PDC). This space supports innovative STEAM learning, is filled with natural light, and features a kiln, a water-cooled laser cutter, and a movable partition wall with a whiteboard finish for hands-on learning.

The PDC’s flexible furnishings make it easy for students to collaborate in small groups. The design integrates technology and power through pull-down electrical cords and interspersed data outlets. We were excited to create the PDC as a dynamic space designed to adapt to new educational approaches that will inspire teachers and students for years to come.

A Good Neighbor

Nestled in a neighborhood that blends residential and commercial spaces, the school’s site and design strikes a thoughtful balance. It respects the surrounding homes while taking its place as a new, modern, clean-lined landmark. By using traditional and industrial materials, Boston Prep feels both contemporary and timeless, making it a proud part of the community.
