Boston Preparatory Charter School
River Street Campus, Hyde Park, MA
Studio G designed Boston Preparatory Charter School in two phases, the first housing 415 students from grades 6-12. Phase 2, a 32,000 SF addition, expands the school to 700 students.
After completing the space programming for the current 400 student population, Studio G designed a building which reflects and enhances Boston Prep’s mission and goal to prepare every student for college. In addition to day-lit classrooms, science labs, library and enrichment rooms, the school offers spaces which foster both formal and casual interactions between students and faculty, encouraging communication of ideas, and strengthening the sense of community.
A full service kitchen enables the school to serve the students breakfast and lunch in the cafeteria. Middle and high schools share a library, full-size gym, art studio as well as outdoor spaces for exercise, team building, and contemplation. The south facing building applies passive solar strategies and includes high performance envelope and systems.
Nestled against a residential neighborhood, but part of a newly reinvigorated commercial strip, the school was sited and designed to be a good neighbor to the residences, while taking its place as a new local landmark. The clean building lines present a modern aesthetic further expressed through the use of traditional and industrial materials. Phase 1 opened in June 2017, on time and under budget. Phase 2 completed in Summer 2018.
