Paige Academy
Roxbury, MA
Located in the Highland Park Historic District, Paige Academy offers an elementary school, pre-school, after-school and summer camp programs. The school originally occupied one side of a 3-story Italianate double house. To meet growing demand, the school purchased the deteriorated adjacent house to expand their programs to serve infants through sixth graders in one building.
Studio G Architects designed a multi-story addition wrapping one side and the rear to expand the educational and other spaces, renovated the entire building to serve new uses, and preserved the historic character of the building. Marble fireplaces, plaster rosettes and ornamental moldings were retained, and conjoined spaces reconfigured to reflect the school’s changing needs. A new entry and egress with an elevator provide universal access and connect two sides of the building at each floor. The existing envelope was preserved and rebuilt, funded in part by Mass. Historical Commission. In 2004 Paige Academy won a Massachusetts Historical Commission award for “Adaptive Re-use Rehabilitation & Restoration”
