Egleston Square Youth Center
Roxbury, MA
Driven by Greater Egleston Community High School’s need for more space, Studio G Architects undertook a 15,000SF transformation of existing school space and an adjacent car barn. At the heart of the new spaces lies the multipurpose room, which functions as a large gathering space for the school, recreational space for the YMCA and a rehearsal space for a theater group, all of which share this multi- use building. The renovations also include new classrooms, science labs, an art room with adjacent dark room, a resource library and a computer lab. Universal access is ensured through a new accessible entrance and a lift. The program includes a kitchen, a conference room and much needed office space for GECHS faculty, therapists and case managers. Corrugated metal cladding on the school’s new School Street entrance offers a prelude to the industrial aesthetic on display in the school’s palette of interior materials. Glass block and borrowed lights throughout create a balance between openness and privacy, and bring daylight into the center of the building.
